Battery life, signal strength key to good baby monitors
"There was no incident or anything like that, but we just want to put new parents at ease," she said. "We already have security at the front door, and the new system provides us with an extra layer of protection so that parents feel safer."
Hospital officials began looking into the idea of adding security last fall. In mid-December, they purchased the monitoring equipment and tags.
Starting now, newborn infants will wear a soft tamper-proof ankle strap and monitor, called a Hugs tag, that will allow nurses to track the baby's whereabouts on the maternity floor day and night. If someone attempts to remove the strap or the infant is moved to an unauthorized zone, an alarm will sound.
Parents often feel upset because they can not keep abreast of their baby's condition. At present, parents are relieved with the assistance of the baby monitor.
A baby monitor is a must have item for most new parents. That's because it's like having an extra ear or even extra eyes to keep tabs on a sleeping baby.
"It's really comforting to know what's going on with the baby without having to be physically in the room with her," Stephanie Hinkaty said. "it gives me a sense of security."
Consumer Reports warns some monitors can be as temperamental as a 2-year-old, so choosing the right monitor could mean the difference between true comfort and a false sense of security.
The magazine tested 10 baby monitors. A basic unit costs $25, while a more elaborate video setup costs $200.
The first test focused on one of the biggest complaints from parents: interference. To make sure that's not a problem, Consumer Reports recommended getting a digital unit.
Also, many parents prefer baby monitors that can go where they go, so battery life is key. Testers found big differences among the different models.
The battery on the Safety First True View Video Monitor didn't even last three hours, while a Sony BabyCall kept going for 28 hours.
Testers also found major differences in signal strength, which they evaluated using a soundtrack of a crying baby. They set up a transmitter next to it, then measured how far away they could move the monitor and still maintain contact.
"All the monitors worked inside their test house, but if you have a larger home or if you want to do yard work during naptime, it may be a different story," said John Galeotafiore of Consumer Reports.
Some monitors lost contact before the tester even stepped 37 feet out of the house, while a few worked as far away as 400 feet.
In the end, testers top-rated the $120 Phillips Avent model #SCD-510. It's digital and also has an excellent battery life.

Be warned, it may not be worth getting replacement parts. You may simply want to replace the unit. Note this experience:
I purchased this monitor when I was pregnant with my first child because it was from Sony. I was happy with it the first few months and then the reception started to wane. After a year or so (ironically just after the warranty expired) our reception got awful and we decided to replace it. After we bought the second I made sure to fill out the warranty info and sure enough, a few weeks later I needed a replacement cord (vacuum accident). When I called Sony I was told it was not under the warranty (Ok- it was my fault anyway) and that to replace this tiny cord would cost me $22.95 PLUS $6.95 shipping PLUS tax. I was livid and tried to replace the cord at Radio Shack and surprise you can't do it because it is not a standard cord. The monitor only cost $30 and I could have bought a new one for what they wanted to charge. I think Sony could make a better product and they should not price-gouge consumers that way. I since bought a Safety 1st dual receiver monitor that has even better reception than the Sony (I can hear her breathing clear as a bell which I never could with the Sony) and having two receivers saves me from having to move it every day from the upstairs to down. Also it gives me a back-up in case of another vacuum incident. Bottom line is the BabyCall is a disappointing product from Sony that should perform better, and the customer service is a joke.
